HORSHAM JOGGERS NEWS – 21st AUGUST

Evening all! Just a few bits of news this time so let’s get on with it shall we?

The Chairman’s bit…….

As summer pushes on I would just like to personally thank everyone who continues to lead Tuesday groups. You help in ensuring that everyone especially new members do not get left behind is immeasurable.

I just wanted to brush up on a few housekeeping guidelines to taking a group, please bear in mind these are only suggestions and I do not want to put anyone off thinking of taking a group, but they will help to make your fellow runners feel more at ease!

  1. Make sure everyone knows the route.
  2. Nominate someone to be a back marker
  3. Check someone has a mobile phone in case of emergency.
  4. Regroup if possible during the run.
  5. When you finish ensure your back marker has returned.

Bank holiday Monday see’s the Horsham Round taking place so please get your teams together and send them in on the registration form to info@hj and don’t forget we will have a “bring your own food to cook” BBQ after!

September brings Horsham Parkrun’s 2nd anniversary on the 3rd and also for some hardy folk the Bacchus on the 11th! As this is a day of heavy drinking as well as running, the idea has been floated of hiring a coach. If you are interested please email info@hj or reply via social media.

Phil.

WSFRL update

From September and beyond, all entries for WSFRL races will be made as a block club entry. Monies must be received four days before the race. This is in line with other clubs.

There are 5 races left in the calendar:

11th Sept Tilgate Forest

9th Oct    Hickstead Gallop

30th Oct   Steepdown Challenge

6th Nov   Gun Powder Trot (Horsham Joggers)

Jenny Boyd will be taking monies for race entries, paid in advance. You can pay for all races, or individually if preferred; £3.00 per race.

6th Nov is Horsham Joggers “Gun Powder Trot”. Race members are requested to reserve this date to volunteer as marshals or helpers on the day.

HJ Merchandise: clearance sale

Are you in need of a t-shirt to cover yourself up with after a race? If you are a size Small, why not grab one of the remaining 25th anniversary t-shirts: they are good quality cotton in grey with a maroon HJ logo. Fiona will have them available for the next couple of weeks at a clearance price of £2. First come, first served.

Continuing the anniversary theme, there are 3 women’s black 30th anniversary technical t-shirts remaining: 1 in size 14, and 2 in size 16. The sizes come up a little small, so would be ideal for size 12 and 14 runners respectively.  Clearance price of £5 for a technical tee – get in!

We also have some of the black track jackets, 1 each in unisex sizes Small and Large, and several in both XL and XXL.  These are ideal for keeping yourself warm after after a summer run. Originally offered at £25, these will be for sale at £15.

This offer will run until the end of September, after which we will be donating the leftover garments to charity clothing banks. Please see Fiona at any Tuesday or Thursday session, and bring payment by cash or cheque.

Leadership in running fitness course (LIRF)

In October there will be another LIRF course run by England Athletics and open to all hj members who want to gain some training in leading others. The club is happy to fund this training for any members who intend to use it to lead a group or assist with learn to run course etc. For more details please click below:

Drinking water at BBHLC

Following concerns from a few members about the availability of fresh water after long runs, the BBH Duty Manager has said that the drinking water tap is in the disabled toilet on the ground floor by the gents. So if members want to fill up water bottles then they can use this tap. If they just want a cup of water then there is a jug of cold water in the cafe area that people can use to fill up beakers. The duty manager said he would speak to the staff on duty on Sunday to make sure that they direct people to the ‘disabled’ toilet and not the ordinary toilet.

HORSHAM JOGGERS NEWS – 3RD JULY

Well it’s been a while since we issued a newsletter so we best crack on then……………….

THE CHAIRMAN’S BIT

Hands on Sports Therapy – Tony Schofield took his first session with us last Tuesday and we hope you enjoyed it! He is offering some great deals on treatments and massages, check them out here http://www.handsonsportstherapy.org/#!the-therapy-club/l01ba

Horsham parkrun turns 100! – On Saturday 16th July our local parkrun hosts its 100th event! Where has the time gone! Anyway the theme is “100 not out” so the order of the day is a cricket or all white theme! We love to see as many of you as possible so be by the pond 8.50am for a 9am start! Also afterwards we will be hosting (weather permitting) a picnic brunch with a few games, bring your own food and drink it should be a beautiful morning.

Ride London – For the third year there is an opportunity for HJ members to be involved with this event on Sunday 31st July . We man one of the drink stations in the Leith hill area. Due to road restrictions we need to be in place early (7am ish) and will be free to go by about 2pm. Kit and lunch are provided and I guarantee it is an event not to be missed. More specific timings and locations will follow. If you are interested email info@horshamjoggers.co.uk and mark your email “Ride London” and we will pass it on. Or have a word with me (Phil Liberman) at club or parkrun!

Race attire – We now have our lovely race t shirts which have made a great new addition to our club clothing line! Could we please respectfully ask that if you are entering a club event or have entered a race through the club name you wear ether the club race vest or t shirt and not learn to run t shirts, 30th anniversary t shirts etc we are rightfully proud of our club and in return we want to show it off to the world in the most professional way! Thank you

Horsham Round – This fabulous 29mile relay event will once again be starting from Horsham Park Bandstand and will include some selected local teams by invitation only. We’ll be taking team registration forms soon so if you can put together a team, watch this space and Facebook for details of how to register.

WSFRL entries – As from September, entry to WSFRL races will only be available en mass via your club rep (Jenny Boyd). This is to allow the league to simplify the registration admin and keep costs low. Most league clubs already operate this group entry system with hj bucking the trend! So from September onwards, if you want to enter up to two days before the race, please ensure you let Jenny know and more importantly PAY YOUR MONEY as we cannot sub anyone for the entry fee on a “I’ll pay you later” basis.

HJ HOODIES ORDER

Orders for the HJ hoodie have now been taken are will be processed for manufacturing. If you haven’t paid by the deadline date (30th June), you won’t be getting your hoodie. Harsh but fair!

HIGH WEALD TRAILS

We are lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful tracks and trails, none more so than the High Weald Landscape Trail and St Leonards Forest. The scenery is breath taking and the opportunity to seek solitude during a solo run or chat with friends on a group run is second to none. However, we have been contacted by the land owners and local farmers and asked to remind our members that they must stick to the designated rights of way and not deviate onto private land which is marked as such. The future of our events and other local races (Heron Way 10k for instance) relies on the good will of the land owners and we need to maintain this relationship.

THE TWINNING BIT – BEER AND SAUSAGE ANYONE?

Horsham Joggers and Mel’s Milers triumph in Lage!

Horsham Joggers & Mel’s Milers were represented at the 45th International Horsterberg Volkslauf series of races In Horsham’s German twin town, Lage. Carol Hoare And Amanda Reilly of Horsham Joggers participated in the 10k event and on an extremely warm morning over an undulating course through forest, returned excellent times of  1hour 3mins  and 1hour 10mins respectively resulting in their leading the field in their respective age groups. Mel’s Milers Colin Shaw took part in the half marathon coming home in a time of 2hours 5 mins to take the honours in the M70 age group. As is customary, the host club T G Lage warmly welcomed the Horsham party & entertained them over the weekend with sightseeing visits, parties & barbecues.

If you’d like to go next year, please see attachment below for a visit to Lage in May 2017. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. David Maurice

HORSHAM 10K – 2017

I know, I know, it’s ages until the next one but there will be some key changes to next years race, including Horsham Joggers taking on the entire event after many years in association with The Lions Club. This will open up some key roles which will need to be filled by the end of this year so that we can share the responsibility among the team leaders. If you have ever wanted to get involved and organise a section for the day, please email info@horshamjoggers.co.uk Some of the roles to be filled will include; Race Secretary, Chief Marshal, Clerk of the Course, Road Restriction team leader, Sector Marshals, Break Down team leader etc. Thanks, Paul Aylett

HORSHAM 10K – 15th MAY at 11:00am

May is (unbelievably!) just around the corner and we are building up steam for probably the best 10k race in Horsham on that day! We rely on volunteers to make our home race a success, so if you are a volunteer veteran or a newbie who wants to get involved for the first time, why not email info@horshamjoggers and offer your support. Watch this space or Facebook and Twitter for more details! After the race everyone is welcome to come along to enjoy a picnic at the rugby ground – bring your own food and drink and mix with all the race goers celebrating their success.   BBHLC UPDATE In March, Mr Chowen took time out from his busy schedule and wrote to us to give the following update on the BBHLC affair:

We have just appointed the design team for the new Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre and it’s our ambition that the new centre purpose built to meet future needs, designed with all the new twenty first century facilities will not only match current usage but far exceed them.

The old centre much loved by some is very space hungry with many awkward nooks and crannies. While the new centre should be very efficient and more economical. We have agreed to retain the running track but will be look for a new site with ancillary facilities.  The new centre will incorporate most of the usage of the current Tube but more effectively, however there will be a loss of the very specialist usage including indoor high jumping.   The cost of retaining was felt not a good use of precious resources but this is always open to interpretation.  In the end we felt that supporting sport at a participation and foundation level rather than high performance, while always supportive, needs regional and national support/money which during four years of discussion has not been forthcoming.

However we are keeping an open mind during design to further support athletics as much as possible. Finally we are working very closely with all the clubs and users in this process. Thanks for your interest.

Kind regards, Jonathan Chowen.

If you’d like to let Mr Chowen know how you feel about it, why not email him direct at: Jonathan.Chowen@horsham.gov.uk

EQUINOX 24:  Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire, 17&18 September

Last year, Horsham Joggers had a relay team and one solo runner at this 24 hour event.  A few Joggers have already entered the 2016 event, and it would be great to see more of us attending this event, where clubs from all over the country take part. The Equinox24 is a 24 hour mixed terrain race around a 10k loop in the spectacular grounds of Belvoir Castle. The event is open to all abilities: whether entering to run solo or in a team of 2-8. Last year saw teams of walkers as well as runners, and the whole spectrum from people who had just started running to those at the top of amateur ultra competition. You set the pace yourself, doing as much or as little as you want. There is free camping from Friday for competitors and spectators, and there was an incredibly supportive and friendly, festival-like atmosphere last year.  More information is available from http://www.equinox24.co.uk/equinox24/ or speak to Committee members Victoria Saunders or Jenny Boyd.

OUR NEW “GUNPOWDER TROT” – SUNDAY 6th NOVEMBER

Members will recall that the Committee has been looking for an alternative venue/ course for the Club’s Valentine’s Run, our West Sussex Fun Run League event.  Runner numbers for this event mean that we have now outgrown the old HQ in Southwater, and the course has been posing increased safety risks due to both pressure of numbers, and increased traffic on the on-road sections. We are pleased to confirm that we will be running an alternative event, the Gunpowder Trot, on Sunday 6th November. This will see us reverting to the Chesworth Farm/ Denne Hill area, where the club used to stage cross-country events in the past. More details will follow in future newsletters, but we would be grateful if members could save this date, as we will need lots of volunteers to host a great race.

WHY THE DEVIL?

Ever wondered why we use a devil logo on club merchandise? Have a look here: https://horshamjoggers.co.uk/category/about-us/history/ to get the complete low down!

MARATHON MINIBUS UPDATE

7 people have expressed an interest in filling a minibus for Brighton Marathon (17th April) and 8 for London the following week. We are happy to provide this for a small contribution (about £8-£10 p/p tbc) as long as we can fill all 16 seats for each race. Therefore we now invite friends, family and other club members to join us. If you would like to be included, please email info@horshamjoggers.co.uk ASAP as seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Price includes early outbound travel to the starting areas and return from the finish area (if required) once all returnees have completed the race or been discharged by St Johns Ambulance! More details will be sent to those who want to join us. We are in need of a driver for the Brighton minibus – please email the HJ mailbox if you can help.

Also if you would like to stand on the committee and help us with the running of the club then please contact any of the committee. There will be 2 items on the agenda which need your nominations – Jogger of the Year and Newcomer of the Year (i.e. anyone joining the club in 2015 who you think has made a contribution to the club) – send nominations to the HJ mailbox.

SOUTH DOWNS WAY 100 MILE RELAY –  SATURDAY 4th JUNE

Although June seems a long way off, especially for those of you who are focusing on training for a spring marathon, it would be useful to get an idea of how many people would be interested in being part of a team in the 2016 SDW Relay. For those who haven’t experienced this excellent event before, it is an “invitation only” event for about 50 teams. Horsham Joggers have been invited once again to enter two teams (of six). As the name suggests this is a relay race over the 97 miles of the South Downs Way, starting at  Beachy Head and finishing at Winchester. Each team consists of six runners who each run three non-consecutive legs of the relay. The distance of each leg is somewhere between 4 and 8 miles and you’ll have between 3 and 4 hours between each of your 3 runs. Each runner will run somewhere between 15 – 18 miles over the course of the day, almost entirely off road. The team travel between the start/finish points of each leg by minibus. There is a strictly enforced 14 hour time limit to complete the event, meaning that an average pace per mile of just over 8.5 minutes is required (over the whole distance). In the past we have had teams consisting of a good mix of different paced runners, with some running faster and some slower than the 8.5 m/m average required. Although a fairly tough (it’s hilly!) long day (expect a 5:00am start and 10:30+pm return) it is a great day. Entry cost is subsidised by the club, the cost per runner is expected to be £25.00 to cover minibus and fuel costs. In addition to 12 runners there are vacancies for a minibus driver and a navigator for each team.  At this stage if you would like to take part (or even if you only think you might be interested in taking part) or want to know more e-mail Tony Johnson: tony@roosthole.co.uk now! Full details of the event can be found on the organisers website: http:// www.southdownsrelay.co.uk

RUN AWAY WEEKEND

The weekend of 9th/10th July sees our first ‘Run Away Weekend’. The concept was to find a location not too far away offering a parkrun with a local race the next day. This will be in the New Forest with the Brockenhurst parkrun on the Saturday morning and the New Forest 10 (miles) the following morning, also at Brockenhurst. Those wishing to go will be responsible for obtaining their entry to the New Forest 10 and finding accommodation. The NF10 starts at 11:15am so reachable on the morning from Horsham for a day trip but best to get there in plenty of time because of the traffic. There are also fun runs for all ages from 10am. For any further information or to let us know if you intend going please speak to Paul Chandler on a club night or email info@horshamjoggers.co.uk

Four Ways to Enjoy Long Runs

Runners often have a love/hate relationship with the long run. We love the sense of accomplishment we feel when it’s over; we hate the anticipation of actually getting out there.

QUIZ NIGHT – 20th February

It appears that the wrong email address for Andy Spriggs was published in the last newsletter so anyone wanting to enter a team for the quiz has not been able to contact Andy. The correct email address is andyjspriggs@tiscali.co.uk

The date for the quiz is 20th February 2016 at 7.30 pm at Warnham Village Hall, Hollands Way, Warnham RH12 3RH. £10 per person to include supper (bring your own drinks). Maximum of 6 per team. Tickets from Andy Spriggs.

The Hampshire Hoppit – 19th June

This is a new trail race that has been announced this week (a marathon and half marathon) and it is being organised by Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletics Club. The date is 19th June 2016. It is mostly off-road on the chalk downs of North Hampshire including Watership Down. It is over 9 months away, however it might be a good time to start planning into the race diaries.

The Start/Finish is at Kingsclere (8-miles from Basingstoke and Newbury). It is a single-lap, well-marked route, along scenic footpaths and trails. There is a website – www.hampshiretrailmarathon.co.uk – with further details and online entry.

LONDON MARATHON TRANSPORT UPDATE

So far 5 members have expressed an interest in supporting a club minibus to London therefore it will not be viable to run it unless more members join us. If you are running or supporting and want to help fill the final 11 seats available, please email info@horshamjoggers.co.uk.

Brighton Marathon transport

One of our members, Caroline Lowe, has asked whether there is any transport organised by the club down to the Brighton Marathon. If several members are interested in this then she would look into hiring a minibus to just drop members off at the race (they would need to make their own way back). If anyone is interested in this can they please email the HJ mailbox – info@horshamjoggers.co.uk.

Edwin Cooke

Pete O’Connell has passed on sad news that Edwin Cooke has died. He was a former member of the club and supreme runner (56.02 10miles, 1.16.09 half marathon as a 50 year old!!). Many of us remember him, he was a good friend of Val and me also living in Wisborough Green so we kept training together talking about his hey days.

Steve Wilson also knew him and added the following anecdote :- A great runner and very pleasant bloke. I remember when he joined joggers – I thought I had my age group all sown up then along he came – older than me and much faster! He was in a different league! I remember him pacing me round the Itchingfield time trial to my best time. I was gasping for breath and Edwin was chatting and encouraging me all the way! That’s two top class HJ’s who have been taken from us far too soon. Bill Clancy sadly passed away quite a few years ago. He ran brilliant times in the late eighties and early nineties – like Edwin he was extremely talented, yet very modest and helpful to the rest of us.

2016 CHALLENGE TROPHY
At the recent committee meeting we agreed to keep the existing four events within the hj Challenge Trophy (Chichester 10k, Haywards Heath 10m, Barns Green Half and The Steepdown Challenge 5m) despite Chichester 10k losing it’s SGP status. The rational for this being that Chi10k is ideally placed within the spring marathon build up and is usually well attended by hj’s finest. Also, no other 10k events fit the calendar as well as Chi10k! ***PLEASE NOTE: Closing date for Chi10k is 22nd Jan 16 with NO ENTRY on the day!***

For those who aren’t familiar with the Challenge Trophy and want to take part; each year we select four events (10k, 10mile, half marathon and WSFRL) and those members who take part are automatically entered into our “internal club championship”. Prizes are awarded at our annual hj awards ceremony at the end of the year. Awards are given to the overall club winner (Shield and trophy) and each five year age category winner from Seniors to V70’s. So if you enter any of the selected races, you could win a trophy! Why not give it a go?

LONDON MARATHON TRANSPORT
Last year we didn’t run a minibus to London due to poor uptake over recent years. However, we did receive some feedback from London regulars who felt that this service should still be offered by hj. If you are running London in April and would benefit from transport to and from the event, please email info @hj to express an interest. If enough joggers get in touch and it becomes viable to fill 16 seats then we will review the decision whether to run the bus up town!

HJ KIT UPDATE
Race vests and t-shirts are available at Up & Running in Horsham. The race vests are £20, and the t-shirts £22. You’ll need to pay by cash or cheque. PLEASE NOTE: the race vests and t-shirts count as official club kit for races, and must be worn at any league or cross-country events in which you might earn points for Horsham Joggers – e.g. West Sussex Fun Run League or Sussex Grand Prix events. They’re pretty smart, so why not wear them for other events too, and spread the word about our club!

HJ Hoodies: you will shortly have the opportunity to order a new HJ hoody. Look out for the survey link on facebook soon. Orders must be placed and paid for by 14th February, and the goods should be available a few weeks later.

HJ caps and EventClips: caps are available to order at £12 from Fiona Clifton, and Paul Chandler has a stock of HJ event clips at £2.15.

Black track jackets: we still have several black HJ jackets available in sizes XL and XXL, at a special price of £15. Sizes S, M and L can be ordered for the full price of £25. See Fiona Clifton for details.

WSFRL: Worthing Lido 4
Our next WSFRL race is on Sunday 31st January. Because of the large numbers of runners entering this race, the organisers have said they may not be able to offer entries on the day. To avoid disappointment, please make sure you enter in advance – online entries only this year. The online entry form is available through the link below – remember to enter as a Horsham Jogger to get your reduced entry fee (£3 compared to the £7 full price).

Horsham Joggers’ WSFRL race (the ‘new’ Valentine’s Run)
As we’ve mentioned in a previous newsletter, we will not be staging the Valentine’s Run this year as the Committee have decided to relocate the event to a course and HQ that can handle the ever increasing number of runners we are attracting. The committee was considering a new date either in March or the autumn and at the Committee meeting this week, we have now opted for the autumn. This will allow us to trial alternative courses, and plenty of time to get the necessary permissions from the council and relevant landowners.

We will keep you updated as dates and details firm up. We will of course also need a new name for the event, and will be asking for suggestions in due course.

Marathon training
Marathon training Sunday long runs will start on 27th December 2015 and details will be on facebook nearer the time. We need all who take part to volunteer to provide the run and water/snack stops. Any questions please speak with James Munden.

Club Kit and Merchandise
A new batch of race vests will be arriving at Up and Running in the next week or so. We are expecting the new race t-shirts to arrive at the end of the following week (13/14 November). We had hoped that they would be available sooner, but unfortunately there has been a delay with the order. Probably best to give Mike at the shop a call to check that stock has arrived before you make a special journey (01403 268688).

Hoodies: thank you to the 66 people who have paid in advance for their hoodies. The order has now been placed, and the finished items will be with us in good time for Christmas. More news once we have a firm delivery date. We’ll do another order in the New Year. In the meantime, if you have any comments about the online ordering and payment system, please speak to Fiona or Victoria.

Event clips: don’t forget that we have special HJ-branded event clips available, to make your race numbers look smart! A pack of 4 costs £2.15. See Paul Chandler for further information – or to acquire a pack (or two).

Notes from the committee
After the usual reports from treasurer and membership secretaries, Phil gave us an update on the proposed plans for the leisure centre at BBH. Essentially, whilst nothing has been agreed yet, it looks like a brand new leisure centre will be built next to the existing one, with the track being left where it is, at least for the medium term. The plan at the moment is for the old centre to remain open until the new one is built circa end of 2017. Tony Johnson is still heavily involved and fighting our corner. Other items discussed were the upcoming social events including the awards night and handicap and the Christmas party, tickets will be on sale shortly from James Munden. The other big item for discussion was our WSFRL race, the valentines run. Due to a big increase in numbers last year, the existing venue and route are no longer suitable. A new route is being sought so watch this space.

Worthing Christmas Cracker – Saturday 5th December 10:00am
The Christmas Cracker Chase is an annual women only fun run. It comprises a 5km and 10km event, along Worthing seafront, normally held on the first Saturday in December. The event starts at the Lido and is an out and back course. It is totally flat and traffic free on a variety of surfaces, sea views all the way! We like to think it is a fun, friendly event and would encourage participants to enter into the Christmas spirit and wear something festive. We aim to donate a good proportion of the proceeds to a charitable cause each year.

Trip to Lage
Following on from the update in the last newsletter, our Twinning Co-ordinator Dave Maurice has provided some tips on organising a trip to Lage.

HJ have a long standing relationship with TG Lage, the local sports club of our twin town. Since then there have been many visits in both directions and as a result strong friendships have been built between the two sporting clubs. So you can be sure that anyone from HJ wishing to visit Lage will receive a warm welcome, especially as the majority of the German club members speak at least some English.

However, if you are considering a visit, the first thing to bear in mind is that Lage is not easily accessible for a short visit. The nearest airports are Munster, Paderborn or Hanover but they are all around 60 miles from Lage, so car rental would be essential. It is worth checking flight availability to these locations as, since the British Government closed the Army bases in the area, there is less demand for air transport.

If you are planning a visit by car using either the ferry or Channel Tunnel, one should be looking at 5 days as a minimum. It takes the best part of a day for the journey in each direction. I always go from Thursday to Monday and use the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk. This is the most economical way to get there, costing approximately £88 return for a car and four passengers. If there are enough of you a mini bus may be a better option. In the past we have hired the Forest and Slinfold community Mini Bus.

There are many places of interest within a 10 mile radius of Lage so taking your car enables you to get more from your visit. In August you have the town festival at the same time you have the Shutzenguild Fest, which is a shooting/hunting festival involving much eating, drinking and merry making.

Lage is a small town with just a couple of B&B’s. There are, however a couple of very nice guest houses in the village of Horster around 4 km from Lage. In Lage I have stayed in The Alte Residenz Hotel Garni. It is a simple hotel probably of two stars but it is clean and the rooms are simple but adequate. They serve an excellent breakfast and are very friendly – Alte Residenz Hotel. It is in a convenient location and the prices are good, see web page.

Other accommodation nearby is:
Hoersterkrug Tel. 0049 52328894 double room with breakfast 70 Euros. (4 days Min stay).
Hiddentrup this is an old converted farm house and ideal venue for a group who want to look after themselves. 5 persons 65 Euros.
