Race Report - Sunday 5th February
===========================
Here is this week’s HJ race report.

Last weekend’s wintry conditions failed to deter 23 Horsham Joggers from travelling to Chichester to contest the top class Chichester 10k Road Race. Fortunately, the roads surrounding Chichester were free from snow and ice, albeit still rather wet, on a cold but otherwise calm, dry morning. Bryan Camfield led the HJ Team home in the fine time of 35m 04s, taking 3rd place in the Male40 age category. Next HJ to finish was Steve Nicholls, who just edged out Gareth Leighton in 35m.29s. In the ladies race Rachael Guckenheim led the team home in an excellent 42m18s and Ali Gormley continued her recent fine form to finish 11th Female V40 in 42m 29s. The race gave the club a strong start in this year’s Sussex Grand Prix competition with many members recording top 3 Sussex spots in their age categories. Full HJ Results from Chicester :

A small group of Horsham Joggers took on the challenge of the Sussex Cross Country Running Championships at Stanmer Park last weekend. Dan Pettitt achieved a creditable 24th place in the Under 17 Mens race, clocking 22.04 secs over the undulating 3.1 mile course. In the Senior Men 7.5 mile race Dean Angell ran strongly to finish 46th in 53min.11 sec and was followed home by Alan Pettitt (92nd place in 65min 27 sec.). Finally a quartet of Horsham Joggers ladies performed commendably well in their first ever Cross Country race, the Senior Ladies 4 miler. Jayne Waller led them home in 69th place (42min 31sec) closely followed by Helen Mallows (42min 40sec). Helen Woods took 77th place (45min 17 sec), one place ahead of Pam Warren (45min 51sec).

Following our successful day at Stanmer Park another small team from HJ have just competed in the Sussex Veteran Championships at Lancing.

Emma Catlow wins place in ‘Target 26.2’ Team
====================================
Horsham Jogger and busy mum, Emma Catlow, has won a competition in Runner’s World magazine for a Asics sponsored place in the Paris Marathon on 15th April. She is one of five runners who made it from 1656 applicants into Team ‘Target 26.2’.

As part of her prize package Emma is being coached by Sam Murphy and is also supported by a nutritionist and physiotherapist. In December Emma met the other contenders in London as well as being kitted out in Asics running gear in preparation for the long cold training runs.

On the day there was a top to toe Bupa Fitness Assessment as well as the all-important planning meeting to start planning the training schedule.

Emma’s schedule started on Boxing Day and so far week 3 has been completed successfully. You can follow Emma’s progress on Runnersworld.co.uk.

Why the Devil?

Monday, July 06, 2009

As the Devil logo has reappered on some of the club kit it may be time to remind members of the legend that surrounds it. The story goes that a man named Mick Mills, reputably a local smuggler, was approahing his last few hours. The Devil arrived to claim his soul but Mick was not prepared to go without a fight. As most of us will empathize with, Mick was a keen runner, but there, I suspect, the similarities end, for Mick gambled everything with the Devil for a chance to win back his soul. They agreed to race along a straight track through St Leonard’s Forest, with the winner being granted Mick’s soul.
There appears to be some debate over who actually won—something tells me that poor old MIck did not get to keep his soul indefinitely—but either way the fire from the Devil was so severe that nothing has ever grown on the path since. To this day it is known as Mick Mills Race. So be careful who you are challenging the next time you fancy a race!
